The title reminds you of the dialogue by Co-Bao, the Vietnamese female agent played by Julia Nixon in “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” which goes like “You not expendable.”
Now I am sure that Sylvester Stallone re-used this word to affirm again that he is not dead, after reactivating the famous series of “Rocky” and “Rambo.”
Along with Stallone, so many actors were gathered that makes you sigh; Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke ,Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, everyone of who are willing to say “I am not dead!”
As a Japanese movie-goer, while waiting for the film I could not help trace the famous work “Seven Samurai” by Kurosawa Akira （黒澤明）,which is also known as the original version of “The Magnificent Seven.” The leader Kambei should be Stallone. Gorobei, who supports the leader should be Willis. Katsushiro the young samurai who falls in love with a village girl should be Rourke. Kyuzo the toughest Miyamoto Musashi style samurai must be Li. Open-minded Heihachi, the wood splitter should be Jason. Sichirouji, the comical and kind of homo-sexual figure to the leader should be Schwarzenegger. Before seeing the film my mind had already been set up as above.
What I witnessed in cinema was, firstly, a straight story of strong American guys going abroad to beat up gad guys including the one wearing suits. Secondly so many Ms; Mississippi Queen, MMA, move of WWE, mercenary, muscle, macho men, mad men, machinegun, motorcycle, missile (or bomb?), military, and murder. I felt like being in a smorgasbord with meat, meat, and meat such as beef, pork, chicken and sausage… My favorite one was Cha Siu Baau, a famous dish for Yum Cha with the meaning of Cantonese barbecue pork buns, even though it was not treated with much respect, you know what I mean?
I felt Sandra is like Co-Bao, the character in “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” who was killed after telling Rambo that he was not expendable. This time Stallone tries to save Sandra’s life, which looked like as though he were trying to erase his old sin of letting Co-Bao die.
Anyway let’s listen to the the actors’ voice from the bottom of their souls;
We are alive and kicking, WE NOT EXPENDABLES!!
